The winners celebrated in style on the podium
after receiving their trophies and invitation to compete at the Metrakit World
Festival in Spain by cracking open and spraying their bottles of non alcoholic
champagne at each other and into the crowd the same way as the World Champions
in the Moto GP celebrate their win.
The 1st Festival of Champions Event took place
on the 6th October at the State Motorcycle Complex, Road Race Circuit,
Broadford, celebrating the New Generation of Road Racers.
Metrakit Juniors from all over Australia
attended to compete in the National Metrakit Junior GP Championship for the
opportunity to represent Australia at the Annual Metrakit World Festival held at
Spain's famous Ricardo Tormo Circuit, Valencia on the 15th and 16th December.
Ashley Zanesco, the face of Metrakit,
performed the National Anthem to kick off the event.
Their were 5 races in each class of the
Metrakit Junior Championship the first 3 consisting of 6 laps and the final two
races consisting of 8 laps, the 70 cc class 9 to 12 year olds and the 80cc Class
13 to 15 years.
Dylan Mavin #30 from QLD, dominated the 80 cc
class to win the Championship, also breaking the lap record of 1:08.793 at
Broadford which was held by himself, with the fastest lap of 1:07.602. Adrian
Stafford #193, finished in 2nd position consistently closing the gap on Mavin
with each race and each lap. The final race Stafford was closer than ever
gaining on Mavin, it was clear that Stafford had found more corner speed as the
day progressed. Nicky Diles #19 bounced back after a spectacular crash into the
tyre wall after crossing the finish line in race 2, finished in 3rd position,
after battling it out with Aaron Corish #7 in race 4 and 5. This was one of the
most exciting races to watch as Corish and Diles swapped paint and rubbed tyres
on many occasions while jostling positions all the way to the checkered flag,
Diles taking 3rd over Corish with just 2 points separating the two.The remaining
riders were in a constant 6 way battle that was of World Grand Prix Caliber.
In the 70cc Metrakit Junior GP Championship,
Matt Davies #414 from NSW was the winner with consistent 1st place in each race,
followed closely by Zac Zanesco #99 who was catching on to Davies before
retiring after finishing the 3rd race due to bike problems allowing Connor Rowe
# 21 from NT to take 2nd position. The battle between the remainder of the field
for 3rd place saw Aidon Corish #87 from NSW take the podium position.
Spanish Metrakit representatives Ligia Dattoli
and Enrique De Juan were in attendance and celebrated with our Australian
Juniors, both were impressed with the high level of skill displayed.
These young Champions have shown that
Australia is capable of competing against the rest of the World in the junior
ranks. This inaugural Metrakit Championship has proved its worth in every way
from organization to professionalism. Metrakit is the way to produce future
World champions.
